No later than yesterday evening we discussed once more the burden on doctors to produce, produce, produce.
An out-of-date fee-for-service system (FFS) is burning out talent, healthcare workers, patients and money. It sets the wrong incentives that is driving the pressure to do more: more visits, more procedures, more products. There is no incentive to do less or more with more quality.
Otherwise, if doctors object today, they risk on losing out promotions, career progressions. Worst cases, they even risk losing their jobs if they don’t deliver the required topline numbers to the business.
Yes, #healthcare is a business.
And that’s not always a bad thing.
But when it is decoupled from outcomes that matter to patients and when it goes at the detriment of spending quality time with patients, then it becomes toxic and detrimental to people’s health. #feeforservice is fostering waste in the system, errors & delays in care, and skyrocketing cost & inefficiencies.
Shared decision making and equal value creation for all is the holy grail to a new system of health –> patients, providers, pharma, payers, policymakers. It generates better #health & better cost structures, too. This is what I am reflecting on in my book #TangoForFive. It is not a book of complaints though. It is a book of solutions!
